How this calculator works

The formula converts everything to square inches, then divides by the area of a single tile and rounds up to a whole tile count.

Step 2 — Convert to square inches. Multiply by 144 (there are 144 square inches per square foot): 24 × 144 = 3,456 sq in.

Step 3 — Apply the waste factor. A 20% waste factor means you multiply the raw area by 1.20: 3,456 × 1.20 = 4,147 sq in total material needed.

Step 4 — Divide by tile area. Each 2-inch square tile covers 2 × 2 = 4 sq in. Dividing: 4,147 ÷ 4 = 1,036.8, which rounds up to 1,037 tiles.

Why 20% for mosaics?

Larger tile formats — 12-inch, 18-inch — use 10% for a straight lay because cuts happen only at the room perimeter. Mosaic tile is different. A 4×6 floor has roughly 20 linear feet of perimeter, and each running foot of edge may require cutting 6 individual 2-inch tiles. Add the drain cutout and the slight irregularity of a mortar-bed shower floor, and waste climbs fast. The 20% factor is a floor, not a ceiling — complex shower floors with multiple drains, bench curbs, or a niche transition can push waste to 25%.

Secondary outputs and what they mean

The calculator also produces material quantities for everything else you need:

  • Floor area: 24 sq ft. This is the raw number you bring to the tile store when buying mesh-mounted sheets. Most mosaic sheets are sold by the square foot.
  • Thinset: 1 bag (50 lb). At roughly 50 sq ft per bag, one bag covers a 24 sq ft floor. However, back-buttering individual mosaic sheets — which is recommended to get full coverage on a textured sheet back — uses more thinset than spreading on the substrate alone. Buy two bags.
  • Grout: 1 bag (25 lb). The coverage estimate in the calculator is based on 12-inch tile with relatively few grout joints. A 2-inch mosaic floor has roughly 36 times more linear grout joint per square foot than a 12-inch tile floor. One 25 lb bag may not be enough; check the manufacturer's grout coverage chart using your actual joint width (typically 1/16 to 1/8 inch for mosaics).
  • Backerboard: 2 sheets (3×5 ft). Two sheets gives you 30 sq ft, covering the 24 sq ft floor with a 6 sq ft allowance for seams and trimming. For a shower floor, cement board or a bonded waterproof membrane system is required — no drywall or standard plywood.

What the calculator does not cover

The formula does not deduct for the drain opening (a few square inches — negligible), and it does not account for a bench, curb, or niche floor if your shower has those features. Add those areas separately by treating each as its own rectangle and running the same calculation.

Recommended materials

A shower floor lives in a permanently wet environment, so material quality matters more here than in most tile applications. White polymer-modified thinset is the standard choice for mosaics — it bonds well on a damp substrate and won't bleed color through translucent or light-colored tiles. For grout, a sanded grout rated for wet areas handles the tight joints on 2-inch mosaic; unsanded grout is only appropriate if your joints are under 1/8 inch.
